  • A few years ago, a PlannersWeb Survey asked visitors to list their favorite planning-related books. The results provided an interesting list of recommended reading, with Jane Jacobs The Death & Life of Great American Cities being the top ranked book.

Planetizen's editorial staff provides a list of recommended planning books, as well as their recommendations of the ten most noteworthy books of the past year.

As on "Car Talk" we also have a "shameless commerce division." Here it is: On the PlannersWeb, you can read excerpts from more than 250 articles published in the Planning Comm'rs Journal, and (for a small fee) immediately order & download many of them. There are three ways to locate articles of interest: (1) browsing by topic; (2) searching by keyword; or (3) using an alphabetic subject index. Some 50 articles are available online in full at no charge.

Other publications produced by the Planning Commissioners Journal, such as Welcome to the Commission: A Guide for New Members, can be ordered from the PlannersWeb online store.

The American Planning Association, the principal membership organization for planners, has an extensive planning bookstore which can be accessed through its web site. Similarly, the APA's web site allows visitors to search by keyword for reports or articles published in one of APA's newsletters or journals. What you'll get is an abstract of the report or article; unfortunately, you'll then need to take the additional step of returning to the APA's bookstore to see if it is available to order.

The second largest publisher of planning-related books (after APA) is Island Press. You can easily order books through their web site. The easiest way of finding books which might be of interest to you is by browsing through their list of Land Use Planning books. You can read the publisher's description of the book before you order it.
