Monuments & Memorials

County courthouses, along with city and town halls, have also served as places for communities to remember their past. Monuments celebrating notable local residents (especially former Presidents & Governors!) and events -- as well as memorials honoring those who gave their lives for their country -- are often prominently placed on the grounds.

Since old courthouses and town halls were frequently placed on spacious squares, these monuments and memorials also visually stand out as affirmations of the community.

For other views of local monuments and memorials, see the Stephenson County Courthouse; Mifflin County Courthouse; Tioga County Courthouse; Middleborough Town Hall; and Philadelphia City Hall (with William Penn's statue anchored atop the building).

In Burlington, Vermont, the City's Civil War monument is on the northwest corner of City Hall Park. In the photo below, City Hall can be seen in the background. The monument's dedication can also be read.
