The Eden Park Water Tower in Cincinnati, Ohio Completed in 1894, the 172 foot high water tower located in Cincinnati's Eden Park, remained in use as a water tower until 1912. Designed by Samuel Hannaford & Sons in the Romanesque Revival style, the structure consists of a cylindrical water tank and an adjoining taller octagonal turret.

Status: Now used by Cincinnati as a communications tower.

Water towers have long been a ubiquitous part of the landscape. As with many other building types, water towers used to be thoughtfully designed -- and stood as prominent local landmarks. The Cincinnati Water Tower and the Detroit, Michigan, Water Works Tower (built in 1879 and capable of pumping 290 million gallons of water a day) are just two of many examples from across the country.

Status: Once one of Detroit's most beloved landmarks, the 185 foot high, brick Water Works Tower was demolished in 1945.
