The City-County Building in Salt Lake City, Utah
One of the grandest municipal buildings in the United States, the Salt Lake City-County Building opened in 1892. Among the events that have occured inside was the murder trial in 1914 of radical labor organizer Joe Hill. After being convicted, Hill was given the option (as required under Utah law) of either being shot to death, or hung at the gallows for his crime. Apparently, Hill told the judge, "I'll take the shooting, I've been shot a couple times before, and I think I can take it." Hill was executed in 1915. Status: Still in use. A $30 million restoration of the building was completed in 1989.
