  • Gerckens, Laurence; Community Aesthetics & Planning, Planning Commissioners Journal, #7, Nov/Dec 1992). On the City Beautiful movement and its impact on planning.
  • Gratz, Roberta Brandes; Cities: Back from the Edge (John Wiley & Sons, 1998). Gratz's book provides excellent insights on the role courthouses, post offices, and libraries play in communities.

  • Johnson, Herbert & Andrist, Ralph; Historic Courthouses of New York State (Columbia Univ. Press, 1977). A fine book on the history of New York's county courthouses.
  • Jones, Theodore; Carnegie Libraries Across America: A Public Legacy (John Wiley & Sons, 1997). An excellent resource on the history of Carnegie libraries.

  • Kunstler, James Howard; How to Mess Up a Town (Planning Commissioners Journal, #17, Winter 1995). A short article taking a look at how one small city lost sight of its civic heritage.
  • Kunstler, James Howard; Remarks to the Florida AIA (August 1998). Includes an interesting discussion of the impact of the City Beautiful movement, and the pride communities used to take in their public buildings.
  • McMahon, Edward; Public Buildings Should Set the Standard (Planning Commissioners Journal, #41, Winter 2001. Why the design of public buildings is something citizens should care about. A concise and informative commentary.
  • Peters, John and Margaret; Virginia's Historic Courthouses (University of Virginia Press, 1995). A beautifully illustrated, and thoughtfully written, book on the design of Virginia's county courthouses.

  • Zurier, Rebecca; The American Firehouse: An Architectural and Social History (Abbeville Press 1982). A fascinating look at the evolution of the American firehouse.
  • Web Sites:

  • Carnegie Libraries of California. This web site has a wealth of information and photos of the many Carnegie libraries built in California.
  • Fire Museum Network. Links to more than 300 fire museums across the country; a number of them are located in historic firehouses.
  • Florida's Historic Courthouses. Probably the most interesting web site focusing on a state's courthouses. The site provides not just photos and postcard images of Florida's courthouses, but interesting explanations of each courthouse's history. Prepared by County Judge Anne Kaylor.
  • Georgia Courthouse Photos. Photos of most of Georgia's county courthouses. Prepared by the Carl Vinson Institute of Government, at The University of Georgia
  • History of Iowa Courthouses. An extremely well-organized web site prepared by the Iowa Judicial Branch with text and photos of Iowa's county courthouses.
  • Ohio County Courthouse Project. Maggie Stewart-Zimmerman's web site has very good photos of most of Ohio's county courthouses.
  • Texas Historical Commission. Detailed information on the Texas Courthouse Preservation Program.
