Is There a Public Building You Admire?

If your answer is YES -- and if you believe well-designed public buildings are important to our cities and towns -- consider the following:

We would like to include on these Web pages information about additional public buildings across the U.S. and Canada -- not just ones we've selected -- but public buildings that visitors to these pages admire, either in their own community or elsewhere.

Here's how you can help:

1. Take a photo of one (or more) public buildings you especially admire, or locate a photo of the building that we would have permission to post online. It can be an older building or a new one (and yes, it's possible for new public buildings to be well-designed, as you can see in the 1991 Glynn County, Georgia, Courthouse!)

2. Then find out something about the building's history and its current and past uses. Write up a brief (no more than 250 word) description of the building, its history, and/or its role in the community.

3. E-mail us the photo and description: info@plannersweb.com or mail to:

Planning Commissioners Journal
P.O. Box 4295
Burlington, VT 05406

4. We'll then add what you've submitted to a new section of Public Buildings: American Images -- with your byline and photo credit. We'll also try to track down a postcard of the building.

Take a look at some examples of what we have in mind:
  • Dearborn County Courthouse in Lawrenceburg, Indiana
  • Firehouse No. 3 in Burlington, Vermont
  • If you have any questions, just e-mail us at the above address.
