| The United States Post Office building in Augusta, Maine, was designed by Mifflin Bell. Built of masonry and granite, it is a rare example of Victorian-era architecture in Maine. As the Portland Transcript newspaper reported on its completion in 1890: "Augusta has one of the most picturesque public buildings that the government has bestowed upon any city in the Union. Built of Hallowell granite which is more attractive to the eye than marble, it is set off with all the graces modern architecture can lend it." Editor's Note: thanks to Anthony Douin for providing information about this building.. | Status: Now houses office space and a branch post office. |
