postcard message IOWA

  • The 1000 Friends of Iowa web site provides information on sprawl-related issues in the state. The Web site includes a Bulletin on current news of interest. Also of particular note is a good short document titled, "Top Ten Things Adversely Affected by Urban Sprawl" -- which points out (among other things) the adverse impacts that superstore development has on small towns.

  • Commission on Urban Planning, Growth Management of Cities, and Protection of Farmland. A study committee set up by the Iowa Legislature to, among other things: "Survey the status of Iowa farmland and natural areas over the past 20 years to determine how much of these areas has been converted to residential, commercial, or industrial use. ... Survey the problems facing the state's cities and the effectiveness of local planning and zoning laws." The Commission will be holding hearings across the state in July, August, and September 1998. Their progress report of meetings already held is available online.
