postcard message

  • Metropolis St. Louis is an organization with about 1,000 members. It has as its mission: "To create and promote an environment in the City of St. Louis that attracts and retains young people" and as its beliefs:
"We, the members of Metropolis St. Louis, believe in our city. We believe it has tremendous potential. We believe in a city, committed to its people, economically and racially diverse, that looks forward to the future without neglecting its history, and encourages growth and opportunity within its boundaries. We believe a strong, prosperous, central city is vital to the quality of life in the region. We further believe a growing, vibrant, young population is crucial to accomplishing these goals. It is our intent, through initiatives suggested by our members and supported by the membership as a whole, to work to begin attracting and retaining young adults to live and do business in our city."

Its web site includes a Focus on Suburban Sprawl section, and News about sprawl in the St. Louis area.

  • Over a dozen community and environmental groups have formed the Boone County Smart Growth Coalition to work toward sustainable, prosperous communities that strike a balance between private and public interests, between urban and rural land use, and between developed areas and natural spaces. Archived at the group's website are various recent news reports and research on the financial, social and environmental costs of unplanned growth in central Missouri.
