Do Americans view sprawl as a problem? One clue can be found in the results of a national survey of 1,000 people and four regional surveys of 500 people each in Denver, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Tampa conducted in October 1999 by the respected Pew Center for Civic Journalism. Another quite interesting (but state-specific) survey which focused directly on public attitudes towards sprawl was conducted by the Vermont Forum on Sprawl. See survey results.
