Solving Sprawl: Models of Smart Growth Across America
by F. Kaid Benfield, Jutka Terris, Nancy Vorsanger

The Nautral Resources Defense Council has published this excellent book containing more than two dozen very well-written and illustrated examples of cities, suburbs, and regions which have -- in various ways -- dealt effectively with sprawl and growth issues. The book also contains a number of short "Snapshots": sidebars focusing on specific topics (e.g., smart growth & social equity; superstore sprawl; building codes; wildlife).

[Editor's note: Solving Sprawl includes a section on a project I'm personally familiar with, the location of a Wal-Mart store in downtown Rutland, Vermont. It provides an accurate and well-presented description of how the city and state worked successfully to persuade Wal-Mart to locate in the downtown area, instead of outside the city.]
