Visions: Choosing a Future for Growing Communities

When it comes to planning, a picture is worth more than a thousand words.  The Environmental Law and Policy Center's report,"Visions:  Choosing a Future for Growing Communities," depicts the benefits of smart growth planning through a series of comparative landscape architectural drawings of four Chicago-area communities.

In each community, three comparative drawings provide a unique "birds-eye" perspective showing both local architectural detail and the regional impact of development on the landscape:
  • Existing Conditions:  How the area looks today;
  • Conventional Development:  How the area might look in the future given typical sprawled development patterns;
  • Smart Growth:  How the area might look in the future with progressive land-use policies.
The "Visions" report empowers people to forsee how the communities we will live in tomorrow are shaped by the policy choices we make today.
